2012 – Present       Managing Director – iBits – Iain Brown IT Solutions Ltd

Freelance database developer with over 20 years of experience. Specialising in Access 97-2016 database development with strong SQL and VBA skills. SQL Server 2000-2014 database development. I am currently looking for contract work in England and I am available for immediate start.

Contracts:

Systems Development & Support Analyst – Legal & General – Jan 2022 – Dec 2023

Responsible as part of a team for the migration of MS Access end user application data to an MS SQL Server Azure solution, including the re-programming of VBA DAO code to ADO. Redeveloping the HMRC annual data returns with regards to ISA, Other Interest and FATCA.

July 2018 – Mar 2019 System Developer – Computershare

Responsible for programming TSQL statements into a MS Access system linked to SQL Server back end to evaluate responses to customer questions to give acceptance or denial of mortgage applications.

May 2018 – Jun 2018 MS Access VBA Developer – Greensill Capital

Design and development of an interim Access application used for maturity reconciliations for a supply chain finance company based in the north-west of England.

Dec 2017 – Jan 2018 MS Access VBA Developer – Unilever (New York)

Development of a globally used Access Database with import/export, reporting and filtering features. Original brief was to automate an existing spread sheet concept, but the data was unsuited for that application, my recommendation of an Access database was then agreed.

June 2015 to Oct 2016 MS Access VBA Developer – Greensill Capital

Working as part of the IT team for a fast-growing name in the financial services sector based at their North West offices. Understanding, developing, documenting and supporting a live MS Access Financial Asset Tracking and Reporting database developed in-house.  This work was taking place during the development of its replacement PostgreSQL system. Development and support of stand-alone MS Excel VBA applications and PostgreSQL processes.

Nov 2012 to Dec 2014 MS Access VBA Developer – Clamonta Engineering

Sole developer for an aerospace company in the midlands, supporting, developing and maintaining their in-house MRP system and working in all areas of their business. System consisted of around 40+ front end MS Access 97 databases all linked to a central back end database.

2008 – 2011                Systems Development Manager – South Leicestershire College

Managing 1 member of staff and the college database systems, responsible for the design, development, implementation, maintenance and support of the colleges 50+ in house integrated database systems running on SQL Server 2005/2008 R2 and MS Access 2003 platforms. Responsible for the administration, security and backups of the SQL Server. Data imports using integration services and notifications using database mail. Migration from MS Access to SQL Server platforms. Table, view/query and stored procedure programming. Report writing using MS Access & SQL Reporting Services. Preparation and production of data returns to government agencies. Knowledge of FE funding methodology.

2007 – 2008                Data Project Manager – Leicester City Council, Children & Young People’s Services

Involved working on 3 mini projects namely to design and implement management information systems to produce the teachers’ annual pension return, DfES form 618g (the teachers census) and the setup of a national minimum data set for all of the children’s workforce. I had a Project Assistant who I line managed and he assisted me in this role. Along with this I was also setting up various other ad-hoc management information systems.

2000 – 2007                Senior Applications Developer – Leicester City Council, Children & Young People’s Services

Design, development, implementation, maintenance and support of MS Access 97/2000/2003 databases for the LCC Education department developments include – Teachers Personnel System, CRB Check, Nursery Grant Administration, Admissions Oversubscription, Recruitment, Stress Management, Special Needs Caseload, Complaints, Continuing Professional Development, Health & Safety Training, Residential Visits, Absence Monitoring, Special Educational Needs Training. Duties also included Canon DIP System administration and general IT consultation, advice & support to users in the department.
